There are many differences between these two professions. The most important one: translators translate written prompts (documents, letters, reports, presentations, etc.) from one language into another, while interpreters do so with oral prompts (speeches, conversations, etc.).

Interpreting rates are calculated depending on several factors:

• Duration: There are full day (6-8h) and half day (3-4h) rates. There are also brief assignments (1-2h). The hourly rate is usually reduced the longer the interpreting assignment is.
• Related effort: This refers to the terminological and specialized preparation, the travel time to and from the venue and, depending on the time frame, it could refer to a compensation for not being able to take on other interpreting assignments happening at the same time. The client usually covers the travel and, if needed, accommodation costs.
• Recording and reusing rights: These are calculated on top of the normal rate and differ from one case to another.

Translation rates are calculated by norm rows („Normzeile” in German). Furthermore, there are things that can lead to the rate going up if they lead to the translator investing more time and effort into the assignment than is usual. This happens for example when the file sent by the client cannot be edited  (for example as a picture/jpeg) and needs to be transcribed first.

• In order to prepare for an assignment, I need more specific information from my client. Any presentations and reports that you can provide me with would be extremely helpful in this regard. However, there are also other relevant types of information that might be useful, such as the names of the people participating in your event. Any information shared with will remain confidential.
• Two working interpreters for longer assignments: Interpreting is quite tiring. This is why we always work in pairs, so that we can switch every 20-30 minutes and thus keep up a solid level of quality of the interpretation. Therefore, you should always hire two interpreters per language pair for assignments that last at least a half or a full day.
• Suitable equipment: Every communication setting is different and requires different technical solutions. In order to have a smooth communication during your event, it is highly recommended that you consider the technical requirements in advance. For example, if you are organising a multilingual conference, it is recommended to use interpreting booths. However, if your event takes place in a setting such as a guided tour, you should use a portable „whispering system”. I can gladly help you find the ideal technical solution for your specific situation.

• Simultaneous: This is when the interpreter speaks almost at the same time with the speaker. In this setting, interpreting booths are necessary. This type of interpreting is usually used for conferences with several languages.
• Whispering/chouchotage: A subtype of simultaneous interpreting where the interpreter interpretes either by speaking in a very low voice or by using a so-called „whispering system”. They are ideal for smaller group or activities that require the participants to move around (for example guided tours).
• Consecutive: Here, the interpreter listens to the original speech, takes notes and conveys the interpreting  some time after the original. This type of interpreting is ideal for official speeches, bilateral talks (for example at the doctor’s, for the authorities, in court, etc.).
• Video interpreting: In this case, the interpreting takes place on a digital communication platform such as Zoom or Microsoft Teams.
• Telephone interpreting: This is when one of the participants is taking part through phone or when the interpreter gets dialed in by telephone and interprets over the phone.

Any information shared with me or my booth colleagues before, during or after the assignment stay confidential. All documents shared by the clients are exclusively used for informational purposes for the assignment.

The rate depends on the time spent assisting – so for example if several phone calls or visits to the authorities are necessary in order to clear out questions or if the assignment requires me to do extensive research in order to put together an application file. Furthermore, sometimes interpreting or translation services can be required. These are then calculated according to the factors mentioned above and are added to the base rate for assistance services. Waiting times in the authorities’ premises are also calculated on top, but with a lower hourly rate.
